Horizontal Integration

Horizontal Integration is a strategy whereby the company expands into businesses that are on the same level of the supply chain. This is usually done through a merger or acquisition of competitors. By doing so, a company increases its market power over both suppliers (upstream) and distributors or customers (downstream). Horizontal integration can lead to an oligopoly or even a monopoly. Horizontal integration is different from vertical integration.
